PIPING IN ‘LAYERS OF GOLD’
Robbie Burns will have company in the Octagon at 12.30pm when the town cryer heralds in the Dunedin pipers. They will lead in the Massed National Anthem to kick off the beginning of the ‘Layers of Gold’ celebrations.

In honour of Dunedin resident Thomas Bracken who, in the 1870’s, penned the words to God Defend New Zealand, the public are invited to join Dunedin schools and choirs on the Octagon’s central carriageway to sing our inspiring National Anthem.

To celebrate its own 150th Anniversary, Allied Press is running public tours of the building that today is home to the Otago Daily Times and the Star Community Newspaper. No building has more stories between its walls than here, where 150 years of local, regional, national and international news has been recorded. See the old printing press, read the headlines, hear the stories….. climb the spiral staircase, smell the panic of a deadline!

GETTING THE GOLD OUT – PAST AND PRESENT
An Engineering Heritage Perspective of Otago's Gold Developments. In this illustrated talk, organised by IPENZ Engineering Heritage, you will learn about: building the roads and bridges to access the goldfields; the engineering techniques and equipment involved in mining and dredging; and the production processes to produce pure gold - extracting, smelting and refining.
