LAND AHOY! - TALL SHIP IN THE HARBOUR
Step back in time and watch as 'new settlers' sail up the harbour aboard the tall ship Steadfast. View them disembarking into dry land at Birch Street wharf - these '1861 immigrants' will make their way on footstep on cart and on horseback to the centre of the their newly adopted city, Dunedin - gateway to the goldfields, via Thomas Burns and St Andrew Streets, then George Street to the Octagon.
Time: Approximate arrival time 10.00am
Venue: Birch Street Wharf
SHANTYTOWN
Walk through Shantytown in the Upper Octagon and actors from the Globe Theatre will convince you you’ve just travelled in a time machine back to the 1860’s. This makeshift camp of miner’s tents will be jostling with characters of the day; the Minister, the Salvationist, the Doctor, the destitute, the pick-pocket and the ladies of the night. A Chinese dragon will make an entrance while children scamper about.
The hungry huddle around camp fires waiting for billies to boil and damper to cook. Boxing, betting and debauchery will greet the new arrivals from the Steadfast . The constabulary will be there maintaining law and order; merchants will be peddling their wares and at the Assaying Office the scales will be weighing miners’ recent good fortunes.
Approximate Start: 11.00am - 3.00pm
SAIL THE TALL SHIP ‘STEADFAST’
"I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky. All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by".
John Masefield, Poet Laureate
Take a harbour cruise on the tall ship Steadfast. This traditionally built sailing ship has sailed from the French Pass in the Marlborough Sounds for its cameo appearance at ‘Layers of Gold’. The Steadfast is similar to the vessels that worked New Zealand’s coastal waters during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The 22.5 metre sailing cutter has a 5 metre bowsprit and draws 3 metres.

Duration 90 minutes.
