JOANNA PAUL

Joanna Margaret Paul (1945 -2003) was born in Hamilton and by the time of her death was residing in Wanganui but her years in Dunedin from the 1970’s through the 1980’s were some of her most productive, including her time as Frances Hodgkins Fellow in 1983. She described herself as ‘a painter of contingency’ yet it never seemed painting ever just ‘fitted in’ rather it became a journal of experiences reflecting every facet of her daily life. She ‘analyzed her pleasures’ be they a cup of tea or a suburban walk, a glimpse through a car window or an umbrella discarded in a chair. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Joanna Margaret Paul Estate.

Double Vision

Steev Peyroux

Steev graduated from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art in 1987. His drawings explore the rich sculptural rhythm and form of Tunnel Beach. Highly detailed cliff faces become an abstract array of shape and shadow, places where erosion has exposed an imaginary underground. Steev enjoys letting the processes of intricate drawing and gestural mark making drive his exploration of a visual thought.

Olav Nielsen

Born in Demark, Olav immigrated to New Zealand with his family at the age of 12. Olav graduated from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art in 2000. Now working full time as a printmaker, he is becoming well known for his beautiful burnished aquatints and mezzotints. Much of Olav’s work draws inspiration from the world of dreams and ambiguous realities.
