Events 2009
Welcome to the 2009 Dunedin Heritage Festival
Dunedin’s second Heritage Festival celebrates our city’s art and literature inheritance by using it as a springboard to stage some unique art and literary events. Our 2009 Festival showcases many of our contemporary artists and writers, encourages participation from all ages in the community, and creates time and spaces for reflection on the great legacies the city has been left by many high achievers in the world of art and literature who have called Dunedin their home.
The impressive list of Festival events is only matched by the generous spirit of community groups whose willingness to embrace the Festival’s raison d’être has been a tribute to this city’s values.
From the ‘Piping In’ on Friday morning to the midnight toll of the city clock at the end of Otago Anniversary Day, heed the call of the Town Cryer as she beckons you to step right up, to indulge your senses and to enjoy

Mayor’s Welcome
One of the endearing things about
There’s a genuine pride in the success of past and present achievements with a link to our city. That’s something we may have learnt from our antecedents - Maori, Scottish and, dare I say it, Chinese - who revere those who contributed to establishing their cultural profile.
Those people take pride in the successes of those who have lived among them.
I consider that as being in much the same category as the enormous, and quite understandable, pride I see on the faces of family and friends celebrating the academic success of their kin on our city streets at graduation time.
The Heritage Festival allows us to focus on those who enhanced our lives - and our reputation - by their achievements: Lawson and Troup; Hodgkins and Hotere; Frame and Baxter and, fortunately for festivals yet to come, the list goes on!
There’s something in this year’s Festival to suit all tastes, and all budgets.
I invite you to enjoy the Festival with me and celebrate
Peter Chin
